Though Dragon's Lair is foremost a game featuring the creative talents of
Don Bluth,
it was not without its challenges. To recreate the precision of video switching and seeking demanded by the game play,
our mystical coders did extensive work framing and wrangling the
ActImagine Mobiclip video codec
to the game's will.
The download size of DSiWare is quite modest, too – much smaller than any port of Dragon's Lair has
typically expected. To fit everything in, we supplemented the game with some custom-tailored codecs of our own.
They can be seen in many of the death and rebirth scenes.
And though Dragon's Lair didn't really call for our cross-platform
Prometheus Engine,
we still put a few pieces of it to good use: DS techies might notice the menus' smooth, run-time
blending of scalable fonts, along with the animated,
anti-aliased,
semi-transparent buttons. These are features of Prometheus that free us from typical
palette and
alpha restrictions.
