Atari Vault on Steam on Linux unplayable due to slow framerate

Tried to play Atari Vault today on Mint 20.2, frame rate was so slow as to be unplayable, even during the intro. Any solutions?

Sorry, we have no specific advice at the moment, but the most likely explanation for significant slowdown would be the lack OpenGL hardware acceleration in a particular platform's video driver.

That does not appear to be the issue; other opengl applications work fine, I'm running the nvidia 460 series driver.
